Consul General Wiener Welcomes Yale Whiffenpoofs Concert to Istanbul Byzantine Cistern
August 3, 2008
Consul General Sharon Wiener welcomed the world-famous Yale Whiffenpoofs to Istanbul. The Whiffenpoofs, an all-male a cappella singing group founded in 1909, performed in a 1500-year-old Byzantine cistern converted into an art gallery in historic Sultanahmet. The Consul General, who was interviewed by CNN Türk's arts and culture program "Afiş," said of the Whiffenpoofs, "They are musical ambassadors of the United States. And I think it’s wonderful for our Turkish friends to get a chance to hear them." Charming the audience with such American classics as "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "On Broadway," the Whiffenpoofs reflected the best of the American college musical scene.
