Consul General Sharon Wiener's Remarks at Inauguration of Bosphorus Vessel Tracking System

July 2, 2008

Consul General Sharon Wiener and Turkish Minister of Transportation Binali Yildirim spoke at the inauguration of a new $5 million expansion to the Bosphorus vessel tracking system, which was built by Lockheed Martin.  The original Bosphorus Vessel Tracking System began operation in July 2003 with 13 remote towers covering the Bosphorus and the Dardenelles.  The system extension expands coverage to important shipping areas in the Marmara Sea and the approaches to the Canakkale straits, and consists of three additional remote sensing towers.
