American Coaches Make Basketball Summer Camp in Diyarbakır a Slam Dunk

U.S. Mission Turkey supported a week-long Turkish Basketball Federation summer camp for 165 boys and girls ages 10-12 from all parts of Turkey in the eastern city of Diyarbakır, including bringing three American coaches to manage the camp. These three ran the camp, along with 25 Turkish coaches, which was hosted by the Diyarbakır Governor and Youth and Sports Directorate. Ankara Public Affairs Officer Tom Leary spoke at the opening press conference, and was widely quoted in local media, which gave extensive front-page coverage to the camp. Turkey’s top-rated news channel NTV interviewed American Head Coach Alan Walls about the importance of this program as a cross-cultural experience. Every participant received a basketball as a souvenir courtesy of the U.S. Mission.
