Passport Renewals
 

The following information is for U.S. citizens whose passports have expired or are about to expire.

Please follow the relevant link for instructions on how to renew your passport:

  • Renewing a passport if more than 15 years has passed since the issuance of the applicant's most recent passport

  • Renewing a passport for a child under the age of 16

  • Renewing a passport for an applicant over the age of 16 whose most recent passport was issued before his/her 16th birthday

  • Renewing a passport for an applicant aged 16 or older whose most recent passport was issued on or after his/her 16th birthday
Your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 years of age or older and 
Your most recent passport was issued within the last 15 years and
Your most recent passport was issued for its full 5 or 10 year validity and
You are able to submit the passport with its application and
You are not requesting a change in the passport data other than a name change due to marriage
If you do not fall in the above categories, you can not apply for renewal by mail.
Application Requirements:  It takes approximately ten days to receive your new passport.  This includes the time it takes for us to transmit the passport application to the United States, receive the new passport and mail it to you.  Please apply early for your new passport. To apply, please mail the following to the nearest Embassy or Consulate via UPS:
Your most recent United States passport and a photocopy. This passport will be cancelled and returned to you with your new passport.

One passport photograph: The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements.
Name change documentation: If you have changed your name since your last passport was issued, you will be required to furnish name-change documentation, such as your original marriage certificate or other legal document and a photocopy. 
Fees: The application fee is U.S. $110.00.  (If you are physically at the U.S. Consulate General in İstanbul, you can make the payment in cash U.S. dollars or credit card.)  For mail-in applications, you need to get cashier’s checks - yurtici doviz ceki or bloke doviz ceki- issued by TEB Bank valid for ten days and they should be received at the U.S. Consulate General in İstanbul at least three days before the expiration date. If you encounter a problem with the local TEB Bank branch on issuing a yurtiçi doviz çeki or bloke doviz çeki, instruct them to contact their İstanbul office for directions on how to do so. If the problem persists, please contact the U.S. Consulate General in İstanbul.  Personal checks are NOT accepted. You may also need to pay a fee to the TEB Bank issuing the check. Cash, personal checks, and Turkish lira are NOT accepted. Please note that, since the use of cashier checks (Yurtiçi Döviz Çeki or Bloke Döviz Çeki) is not common in Turkey, you may encounter some difficulty in obtaining them at a local bank branch; however, the headquarters of the bank listed above has confirmed that they are issuable at any branch in Turkey. If the staff at a bank refuses to do so, they recommend that you request the branch contact their İstanbul office for further instructions. The U.S. Consulate General in İstanbul cannot accept signed consent forms for credit cards and does not recommend sending cash by mail.  
Finding the UPS nearest to you:   In order to find the UPS office closest to you, please call 444-0033. We will return your passport via UPS to the return address you include on your original UPS package.

Renewal by mail:  You may only apply for passport renewal for mail if you meet the following guidelines:

  • You are at least 16 years old at the time of application and
  • Your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 years of age or older and 
  • Your most recent passport was issued within the last 15 years and
  • Your most recent passport was issued for its full 10 year validity and
  • You are able to submit the passport with its application and
  • You are not requesting a change in the passport data other than a name change due to marriage

If you do not fall in the above categories, you can not apply for renewal by mail.
