U.S. Mid-Term Elections Breakfast Program

November 8, 2006

The U.S. mid-term elections continued to be a focus of Consulate activity, as Consul General Jones hosted a breakfast the day after the elections to discuss the projected outcome. The CG and guest Professor Sabri Sayari of Sabancı University, along with Public Affairs Officer Kuehl, made brief presentations on the American system of government and discussed the results in this context. About 20 selected student leaders from Bahcesehir, Bilgi, Fatih, Galatasaray and Marmara universities attended the breakfast. The CG, Sayari and Kuehl then fielded questions about the U.S. system and the victory by Democratic House candidates for Turkish-American relations. The students were grateful for information about the stability of the U.S. system’s checks and balances and were surprised to hear that the victory by the Democrats might not have a huge impact on U.S. foreign policy.
