Speaker on Religion Reaches Broad Audiences
March 22-25, 2006
University of Tennessee history professor Wilfred McClay met a wide range of audiences in Istanbul and Bursa during his March 22-25 speaking program. McClay described religion in America and the American idea of secularism to various academics including professors, graduate students, and theologians in these cities. This program originated last year when speaker James Ceaser, professor of government at the University of Virginia, was asked how America combined religion and modernity, which contrasted with the French-derived system in Turkey where the government actively keeps religion out of public institutions.
