Consul General Wiener Thanks Istanbul Governor for Assistance Following Terrorist Attack
Istanbul
July 15, 2008
Consul General Sharon Wiener called on Istanbul Governor Muammer Güler at his office in the historic former Ottoman Sublime Porte to offer condolences for the three policeman who were killed in the terrorist attack against the U.S. Consulate General on July 9, and to thank the Governor for the assistance of Turkish security forces in its aftermath. Speaking to the press during the visit, the Consul General said, "We very much appreciate the role that the Turkish police and security forces play in protecting our Consulate. . . . It was heartening to see on that day that both the Turkish security forces and American security forces did their job and did it very well. I think it’s important to keep the focus on the fact this was a terrorist attack, and I think our reaction has shown that we are not going to let terrorists deter us from doing our work; and this has only led to closer cooperation between Turkey and the United States in fighting terrorism as we have close cooperation on so many other issues."
