Consul General Sharon Anderholm Wiener's First Visit to Edirne

December 11-12, 2007

Consul General Sharon A. Wiener paid her first visit to Edirne, one of the historical cities in the Istanbul consular district. Ms. Wiener met Governor Nusret Miroglu, Mayor Hamdi Sedefci, and Umit Mihlayanlar, President, Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Situated between the Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish borders, Edirne was the capital of the Ottoman Empire for almost forty years. The Consul General's visit to this historically and culturally rich city gave officials with whom the CG met an opportunity to exchange ideas with her in an official and introductory setting. During her visit, the Consul General also spoke to the press.

Consul General Sharon A. Wiener also visited Edirne's most historical and religious sites: Selimiye Mosque, the largest mosque built by Sinan the Magnificent; the house and the garden of Bahai where Baha"ullah, the founder of the Bahai faith lived; the Jewish Synagogue; the Bulgarian Church; the Beyazit II Mosque Complex and Health Museum; and the Palace of the Empire.
