Ambassador Francis J. Ricciardone's Independence Day Remarks in Istanbul

[Turkish] Sayın Vali, Sayın Birinci Ordu Komutanlığı Temsilcisi, Sayın Büyükşehir Belediye Başkan Vekili, Sayın Başsavcılar, Sayın Milletvekilleri, Sayın Fener Rum Ekumenik Patrikhanesi Temsilcileri, Sayın Hahambaşı İsak Haleva, Sayın Başpiskopos Aram Ateşyan, Sayın Metropolit Yusuf Çetin ve Sayın Patrik Vekili Yusuf Sağ, Sayin Müftü; diplomasi, kültür, akademi, medya, iş dünyası, siyaset ve sivil toplumu temsil eden  değerli misafirlerimiz,  my fellow American citizens: 

[Turkish] Amerika’nın bağımsızlığını, ve Türk-Amerikan dostluğunu  kutladığımız törenimize hoşgeldiniz.  Bugün İstanbul’da, varlığınızla bizi şereflendirdiğiniz için teşekkür ederim. 

I thank Consul General Scott Kilner and the members of our Mission at the Consulate General for their long hours and dedication in organizing this celebration.  Let me also thank the American-Turkish business community who so generously supported our celebrations in Adana last week, here tonight, in Ankara tomorrow, and in Izmir on Thursday. Thanks and welcome also to the Young Fellaz Brass Band of New Orleans, who have performed at the Istanbul Jazz Festival. 

As Consul General Kilner observed, Istanbul sits at the heart of the modern U.S. – Turkish friendship.  This is where Americans and Turks from all walks of life come together most frequently and most naturally.  As Istanbul has regained its natural eminence among world cities, I am pleased to see more Americans choosing to become a part of its commercial, intellectual, artistic, and athletic life.  Istanbul once again is a global center not only for the exchange of goods, but also for ideas. 

[Turkish] Sayın Vali, sevgili dostlar, Türkiye’ye Büyükelçi olarak döndükten sonra sizlerle ikinci kez Bağımsızlık Günümüzü kutluyorum.  Ülkelerimiz arasındaki dostluğun, güvenlik ittifakının ve ekonomik ortaklığın her zamankinden daha güçlü olduğuna inanıyorum. Ve tüm bu gelişmeler sadece ortak menfaatlerimiz sayesinde değil, aynı zamanda ortak değerlerimiz sayesinde gerçekleşiyor. 

On Independence Day, America celebrates its freedom.  We struggled for 13 years following the Declaration of Independence to write and adopt a constitution.  We failed in our first attempts.  We finally adopted our constitution only together with ten specific amendments to guarantee our freedoms, known as our Bill of Rights.  And the very first of these ten was this: 

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

225 years since they were written, Americans are still living and debating these words.  And today, Turks are also debating how best to guarantee their freedoms in a new constitution that will stand the test of time.  Truly, in our different ways and traditions, Turks and Americans share a profound love of freedom, as expressed by the Turkish Republic’s heroic founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: 

[Turkish] Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin kahraman kurucusu Atatürk bu vizyonu şu şekilde ifade etmişti: 

[Turkish] “Her fert, istediğini düşünmek, istediğine inanmak, kendine mahsus siyasi bir fikre sahip olmak, seçtiği bir dinin icaplarını yapmak veya yapmamak hak ve hürriyetine sahiptir.  

[Turkish] Kimsenin fikrine ve vicdanına hakim olunamaz. Vicdan hürriyeti, mutlak ve taarruz edilemez, ferdin tabii haklarının en mühimlerinden tanınmalıdır.” 

Please join me then, in saluting American-Turkish friendship, mutual prosperity and securityö and in reaffirming our shared love for freedom.  Welcome once again to the United States Consulate General, and let us enjoy the rest of the evening together with the "Young Fellaz".
