Magnum Photo Exhibit at Istanbul Modern Museum
February 16, 2007
U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul provided support to Istanbul’s premiere modern art museum, the Istanbul Modern, for a major exhibit of Magnum Agency photographs by American Photographer Alex Webb. The exhibit featured 16 other Magnum Agency photographers who did significant work in or about Turkey. Webb’s work in the combined traditions of photojournalism and street photography drew admiration and amazement from attendees at the opening. During the exhibit’s opening gala, the Public Affairs Officer accepted on behalf of the Consul General an exhibition catalogue in a presentation case with an inscription recognizing the Consulate General’s contribution to the exhibit. Robert Capa, one of Magnum’s founders, Leonard Freed, Costa Manos and Jim Goldberg were the other American artists represented, but only Webb of the living photographers was able to come to Turkey.
