Istanbul Marks 233rd American Independence Day

The 233rd Anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence was celebrated at the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul. Guests and friends were greeted by Consul General Sharon Anderholm Wiener and Ambassador James Jeffrey.  Guests who arrived early congregated in the courtyard and were able to enjoy Yale University’s a cappella group, Whim ‘n Rhythm.

The ceremony began with the Marine Color Guard presentation.  Turkish and American national anthems were sung by opera singer Demetra George Mustafaoğlu followed by remarks of Consul General Wiener and Ambassador Jeffrey. The U.S. Marines escorted the Consul General and Ambassador to the traditional cake cutting ceremony, and guests were invited to have cake and champagne afterwards.

U.S. companies generously sponsored the event with delicious food and drinks. The performance of the New Orleans New Wave Brass Band ended the evening’s festivities.
